Newton junior varsity girls’ golf team wins

JOHNSTON — Newton High’s junior varsity girls’ golf team defeated host Johnston by 10 strokes on the Par-3 course at Jester Park Thursday.

Freshman Taylor Dydell fired a 39 to lead the Cardinals in the nine-hole event. Jessie Smith carded a 41 while Hannah Scotton and Alyssa Bartels each had a 45.

Amber Sorenson shot a 47 and Lizzy Coyle had a 49.

The Cardinal junior varsity is three for three in meets this season, winning competitions against West Des Moines Valley on Monday and Grinnell on Tuesday.

“The girls are having a great season and are enjoying their time on the different golf courses,” said Alison Grier, NHS assistant coach. “They are improving with every meet and are starting to challenge for varsity spots.”

Newton played against Valley at Willow Creek, posting a 215 team score on Monday. Coyle had a 52 followed by Scotton at 53, Dydell at 54 and Bartels at 56.
