Newton Public Library to offer ‘DASH for the STASH’ with $1,000 prize

The Newton Public Library is participating in the DASH for the STASH, a contest, which began Wednesday and goes through May 15, as part of Financial Literacy Month.

The statewide winner for Iowa will be awarded $1,000 to open or add to an Individual Retirement Account (IRA), thanks to the Investor Protection Institute (IPI) and the Iowa Insurance Division.

The DASH for the STASH will play out at nearly 80 libraries and other locations across Iowa. The contest works much like a scavenger hunt. But instead of collecting objects, players gather information and leave answers to quiz questions.

“Our goal is to impart some financial knowledge — in a fun and easy way — on how to save, invest, and protect your nest egg. Everyone will learn something,” said Nicole Lindstrom, a librarian at Newton Public Library

To play, participants will go to the Newton Public Library at 100 N. Third Ave. W., to find four posters. They will read each poster, access the quiz question and choose an answer. The posters cover topics of importance to savers and investors—such as understanding investment fees, finding financial advisors, avoiding fraud, and learning about investment products.

“The easiest way to play DASH for the STASH is to use a smart phone or mobile device to scan each poster’s QR code. We will assist and have How-To’s available for those not sure how to use their mobile phones and QR codes. We want everyone who wants to participate, be able to participate,” said Lindstrom.

“Getting people to focus on investing for retirement is not a game, but DASH for the STASH is a great way to engage participants who might not otherwise pay attention to this crucial part of their overall financial picture,” said Don Blandin, president and CEO of the Investor Protection Institute.

Blandin added: “DASH for the STASH was a great success last year in Iowa, with 200 participants who entered the contest in approximately 80 participating locations, primarily public libraries. We’re excited to partner with Iowa libraries and workplaces for the contest again this year and are dedicated to educating even more Iowans to be wise and safe investors.”
