Kalkhoff breaks long-standing discus meet mark at Osky Relays

Harris, Coen earn golds

OSKALOOSA — Newton High senior Sarah Kalkhoff ramped up her performance in the discus ring Saturday. She broke an 18-year-old record winning the Class A girls’ discus at the 88th Osky Relays at Oskaloosa’s Lacey Complex.

Kalkhoff increased her distance by 8 feet, 2 inches from her first competition of the season. She won at Oskaloosa with a throw of 134-10, which was more than four feet farther the standing record of 130-1 set in 1997.

Kalkhoff is the defending Class 4A state meet champion and NHS record holder at 140-11.

Senior Deonne Harris remains undefeated in the 110-meter high hurdles this season. Harris claimed the gold medal in 15.14 seconds. Harris edged out Micheal Buma of Pella to win the 400 hurdles in 57.35 seconds. Buma’s time was 57.37 seconds.

Grace Coen, a junior, turned in the other gold-medal performance for the Newton track teams Saturday. She also broke a meet record.

Coen, who is the NHS record holder in the 1,500 meters at 4 minutes, 42.40 seconds, won the 1,500 in 4:57.69. The previous Osky Relays 1,500 record was 5:05.99 set in 2008. Teammate Sarah Prendergast placed eighth in the race in 6:23.68.

The Cardinal girls scored 94 points, finishing fourth in the Class A girls’ division. Pella won the Class A title with 174 points followed by Oskaloosa with 151 and Ottumwa with 124. Centerville was fifth with 17 points and Albia had 10 points.

Newton’s boys took sixth with 49 points at the fourth longest running high school boys’ track meet in Iowa. Pella racked up 157 points to win followed by Oskaloosa at 101.50, Williamsburg at 73, Ottumwa at 54 and South Tama at 51. Centerville was seventh with 39.50 points and Albia scored 30 points.

“The team competed well today. We were limited in entries and were missing several girls because of other commitments. It gave us a chance to try some different things and see how some girls worked in other events,” said Rachel Tomas, Newton girls’ head coach.

“I was pleased to come away with two new meet records and several season best performances. I was impressed with our performances and effort and to see improvement from previous meets,” Tomas said.

Kalkhoff placed second in the shot put with a throw of 38-.75 while Marissa Borgerding of Pella won at 38-11. Newton’s Haley Revell was fifth in the shot at 30-9.25 and she took sixth in the discus with season-best a toss of 97-10.

Morgann Eide earned the second-place medal in the 100-meter high hurdles in 17.49 seconds. Liz McVey took fifth in 18.44. The two combined with Fran Lucas and Alexis Stout to take third in the 400-meter shuttle hurdle relay in 1:14.51. Stout placed this in the 400 hurdles in 1:12.38.

Newton’s girls ran second in the 4x100 and 4x200 relay races. Sydney Jenkins, McVey, Stout and Leela Spencer turned in a season-best time of 52.32 seconds in the 4x100. The foursome of Jenkins, Spencer, Stout and Jordan Banfield posted a 1:52.19 in the 4x200.

Spencer finished fourth in the 200 meters in 28.82 seconds and Serenity Stier was seventh in 31.62. Hannah Yeager was seventh in the 100 meters in 15.90 seconds.

Senior Hailey Coy placed fourth in the 800 meters ahead of teammate Tessa Keeton, in 2:38.06 and 2:45.55. Coy was fifth in the 400-meter dash in 1:06.99 while Michaella Cope ran 10th in 1:18.83.

The girls’ 800-meter sprint relay team of Fran Lucas, Audrey Lucas, Kenna Winther and Hannah Boecker was fourth in 2:10.21. Coy, Keeton, Kaelee Knoll and Sydney Hook combined for fourth in the 4x400 relay in 4:34.03. Winther, Hook, Keeton and Knoll posted a fifth-place time of 5:01.70 in the 1,600 distance medley relay.

Boecker cleared the high jump bar at 4-2 for fifth. Winther was sixth in the long jump with a leap of 13-11 and Prendergast was ninth at 11-8.

For the Cardinal boys, Harris’ 400 hurdle winning time is 10th-best in the state. Jarom Williams was out with a muscle strain.

“We had a good meet over the weekend,” said Tom Bartello, Newton boys’ head coach. “We’re hoping to have Jarom back by our home meet Thursday. We’ve had some freshman who stepped up and filled gaps nicely.”

The 1,600 distance relay team of Harrison McCarey, Caron Cazett, Jake Bennett and Jack Callaghan posted a second-place finish in 4:05.27. Callagahan ran fourth int he 400 meters in 54.71 seconds and Bennett was 12th in 57.39.

Jace Lukefar captured third in the discus event with a throw of 136-4 and Mason Bowes was seventh at 110-9. Bowes takes fourth in the shot put with a toss of 38-8.75, and Alex Miller was sixth at 37-2.

Matthew Karsten placed sixth in the 100-meter dash in 12.01 seconds. Clayton Baltisberger was 13th in the 200 and Jaron Roush was 14th in 25.90 and 27.71, respectively.

Christian Laube, a senior, finished sixth in the 1,600 in 4:57.42 and Dylan Main was 11th in 5:27.46. Mikey Bradley took seventh in the 800 meters in 2:16.93 and Laube ran eighth in 4:57.42.

Laube and Bradley combined with De’Andre Roush and Zach Theis for fifth in the 4x800-meter relay race in 9:33.40. Callaghan, Bennett, Karsten and Harris posted a seventh-place finish time of 3L54.25 in the 4x400 relay.

Newton was sixth in both the 4x100 and 4x200 relay races. In the 4x100, Josh Miravalies, McCarrey, Karsten and Harris ran the race in 46.71 seconds. Miravalies, Cazett, Baltisberger and Jaron Roush posted a time of 1:44.85 in the 4x200.

Newton’s girls are at Boone Monday in a rescheduled meet. Field events begin at 4:30 p.m. The girls go to Ames on Tuesday.

“This is a big week for us with three meets and the last chance for Drake qualifying. I have no doubt the girls will step up to the challenge,” Tomas said.

Newton’s boys and girls host the NHS Cardinal Invitational track meet Thursday at H.A. Lynn Stadium. Field events begin at 4:30 p.m.
