City seeks to fill Alliant Hometown Rewards position

The City of Newton is looking to fill the position of Energy Efficiency Community Coordinator after being selected for the Alliant Energy Hometown Rewards program.

The program is a partnership that encourages all community members — residents, government, businesses and industries — to develop and implement energy management initiatives that save money and improve the environment. The city was given at grant worth more than $100,000 with the request that a position be made to handle the program.

“The whole purpose is to encourage conservation and the best use of our energy and sustainability and some of those issues that are pretty important today,” City Administrator Bob Knabel said. “Alliant has found that, in terms of being more focused on what they are trying to achieve. Cities are better served having a person that is focused entirely on that effort.”

Funds to staff this position come entirely from the grant, with the city providing space for person to work. Knabel said the cities role is to provide oversight and support and to help facilitate objectives the program designs.

This two year, part time position will provide direction and oversight for the Alliant Energy Hometown Rewards Program. This program is a temporary, two year partnership between Alliant Energy, Black Hills Energy, and the city of Newton which sets community goals around energy efficiency and sustainability and implements local initiatives to meet those goals.

The position will play a critical role in working with businesses and individuals looking to improve their energy efficiency and sustainability. The City of Newton is looking for a motivated, organized, community-oriented individual to oversee the responsibilities of the Hometown Rewards Program.

Some responsibilities include: Working with businesses and individuals to improve energy efficiency and sustainability, leading community programs, projects, and events related to energy efficiency and sustainability, coordinate and facilitate the local Hometown Rewards Steering Committee and work with the Hometown Rewards Steering Committee in goal setting, project planning, and implementation.

Alliant Energy Hometown Rewards encourages residential and business customers in Iowa to reduce their energy usage either by adopting energy-efficient behaviors (shutting off lights, turning down the furnace, etc.) or investing in energy-efficient upgrades (compact fluorescent light bulbs, new insulation, new appliances, etc.).
