Cardinal boys win three LHC indoor events

GRINNELL — Newton High senior Jarom Williams wasn’t able to defend his Little Hawkeye Conference Indoor long jump championship Thursday. So, he just went out and won two LHC indoor titles on the track.

Williams and junior Jake Bennett went first and third in the 400-meter dash for Newton. Williams pulled away to claim the top spot in 54.49 seconds and Bennett’s time was 57.55 seconds. Later in the meet, Williams captured the 200-meter dash title at the 2015 Little Hawkeye Conference Indoor Meet at Grinnell College’s Bear Athletic Center.

It was senior Deonne Harris, who flew down the track and over the hurdles for the Cardinals. Harris posted a personal-best time of 8.12 seconds in a dominating race

to defend his LHC indoor 60-meter hurdle championship.

“Deonne’s time is one of the top times in the state,” said Tom Bartello, Newton boys’ head coach.

Williams captured the 200 meter title in 23.90 seconds. Matthew Karsten was seventh in 25.02.

Williams finished second in the long jump with a leap of 20 feet, 0.5 inches. Chase VanSant of Pella won the event at 20-8.

In the 60-meter dash, Karsten placed 12th in 7.76 seconds, Jaron Roush was 17th in 8.22 and Skyler Tool took 20th in 8.98.
