Cardinal boys win three LHC indoor events

GRINNELL — Newton High senior Jarom Williams wasn’t able to defend his Little Hawkeye Conference Indoor long jump championship Thursday. So, he just went out and won two LHC indoor titles on the track.

Williams and junior Jake Bennett went first and third in the 400-meter dash for Newton. Williams pulled away to claim the top spot in 54.49 seconds and Bennett’s time was 57.55 seconds. Later in the meet, Williams captured the 200-meter dash title at the 2015 Little Hawkeye Conference Indoor Meet at Grinnell College’s Bear Athletic Center.

It was senior Deonne Harris, who flew down the track and over the hurdles for the Cardinals. Harris posted a personal-best time of 8.12 seconds in a dominating race

to defend his LHC indoor 60-meter hurdle championship.

“Deonne’s time is one of the top times in the state,” said Tom Bartello, Newton boys’ head coach.

Williams captured the 200 meter title in 23.90 seconds. Matthew Karsten was seventh in 25.02.

Williams finished second in the long jump with a leap of 20 feet, 0.5 inches. Chase VanSant of Pella won the event at 20-8.

In the 60-meter dash, Karsten placed 12th in 7.76 seconds, Jaron Roush was 17th in 8.22 and Skyler Tool took 20th in 8.98.

De’Andre Roush placed 15th in the 800 meters in 3 minutes, 57.33 seconds. Christian Laube finished 12th in the 1,600-meter run in 5:22.03 followed by Dylan Main in 14th in 5:35.52 and Zach Theis in 18th at 5:48.04.

Newton’s 1,600-meter distance medley relay team of Carson Cazett, Clayton Baltisberger, Bennett and Laube finished fourth in 4:05.21

The 4x200-meter relay team of Cazett, Baltisberger, Karsten and Josh Miravalles ran sixth in 1:45.82. Cazett, Baltisberger and Karsten combined with Harris to place seventh in the 4x400-meter relay race in 4:02.77.

In the 4x800 relay, Laube, Mikey Bradley, Theis and Main combined for an eight-place time of 9:46.

Mason Bowes placed 11th in the shot put event with a throw of 39-9. Alex Miller was 13th at 37-10 followed by Jace Lukefahr in 15th at 36-9.5 and Landon Hansen in 16th at 35-9.5.

The Cardinals wrap up their indoor track season Tuesday at a meet hosted by Iowa State in Ames.
