James, Freland, Van Houweling receive IGCA honors

Lynnville-Sully senior Lysandra James and Prairie City-Monroe senior Rachel Freland received postseason basketball honors Tuesday when the Iowa Girls’ Coaches Association announced its 2015 All-State and All-District basketball teams.

James earned Class 1A All-State second-team honors and was named to the 1A Southeast All-District team. Lynnville-Sully’s head coach Jerry Hulsing was named the Southeast All-District coach of the year.

James, a 5-foot-10 inch post player, led the Lynnville-Sully girls in scoring and rebounding this season. James scored 306 points and grabbed 212 rebounds as the Hawks went 22-2 and finished ranked 10th in the final Class 1A poll. They lost to Springville in a regional championship game.

James was named to the Iowa Basketball Coaches Association Class 1A Region 5 team also.

Freland was named to the IGCA Class 3A All-State second team. Freland, who is 5-feet-11 inches tall, led the PCM Mustang girls with 407 points, 99 rebounds, 15 blocked shots and 83 steals. She went 48-of-143 from beyond the 3-point arc this season.

Freland and fellow PCM senior Courtney Van Houweling were selected to the IGCA Class 3A Southwest All-District team. Van Houweling, who is 5-foot-10 inches, was the team’s second leading scorer with 257 points. She also had 108 rebounds, a team-high 103 assists and 88 steals.

The IGCA also announced its 2015 Larry Niemeyer Basketball All-Star game rosters. James was selected to the Class 1A White team, Van Houweling was selected to the Class 3A Grey team and Feland was named to the Class 3A/4A/5A Select Grey team. The all-star games are March 28 and 29 at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids.
