SIGOURNEY — Cashing in at the free-throw line were the Lynnville-Sully basketball teams Tuesday night on the road in South Iowa Cedar League contests.

The Class 1A sixth-ranked Lynnville-Sully girls sank 22-of-31 charities on their way to a 57-41 win over host Sigourney. Lynnville-Sully’s girls stayed undefeated at 19-0 overall and 18-0 in SICL play.

In the second game of the conference doubleheader, the Hawk boys went 18-of-26 at the free-throw line in their 52-43 win over the Savage boys. Lynnville-Sully’s boys are 21-5 overall and 11-5 in conference action.

Lynnville-Sully’s girls trailed by two points, 15-13, to the Savages at the end of the first quarter. The Hawks turned the tables quickly to lead 27-23 at halftime. They outscored Sigourney’s girls 30-18 in the second half.

“I thought in the second half we did a better job on the defensive end not letting Sigourney get open looks and we rebounded better,” said Jerry Hulsing, Lynnville-Sully head coach. “Our offense was sharper where we cut down on our turnovers and got some easy looks, plus I thought we got out and ran the floor well.”

Lysandra James had a double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds for Lynnville-Sully. Brenna Lanser also had 17 points, plus grabbed nine rebounds, had two blocked shots and dished out three assists.

Madison Rasmusson fired in 14 points and made three steals for the Hawk girls. Marissa Vos scored eight points and pulled down 12 rebounds. Kasiah Ehresman handed out nine assists, made three steals and scored one point.

Lynnville-Sully’s girls shot 30 percent, 16-of-54, from the field and had 51 rebounds. Sigourney went 15-of-52, 29 percent, from the field and hit 10-of-17 free throw attempts.

Sierra Davis scored 15 points for Sigourney and had four steals. Jordan Carter had 10 points and seven rebounds.

In the boys’ game, the Hawks and Savages were locked in a close contest. Sigourney was up 16-15 after one quarter and led 28-25 at halftime.

Lynnville-Sully wiped out a 36-32 deficit with a 20-7 scoring surge in the final eight minutes of play.

“It was a big road victory for the Hawks. We didn’t shoot the ball real well, but found other ways to get the job done,” said Nick Harthoorn, Lynnville-Sully boys’ head coach. “We played excellent defense in the second half and were able to make a run in the fourth quarter.”

The Hawk boys shot 36 percent, 16-of-45, from the field. They had four players score in the game — all in double figures.

Ben Trettin led the way with 17 points and had two steals. Kyle Van Dyke worked the inside game for 13 points and 14 rebounds. Sage Ehresman chipped in with 12 points. Jesse Van Wyk had 10 points and nine rebounds.

It was only the third loss of the season for the Sigourney boys (13-3). Blaine Gretter paced the Savages with 16 points followed by Matus Stevko with 11 points and Colby Kerkove with 10 points. Sigourney shot 41 percent, 19-of-46, from the field and went 4-of-4 at the line.
