• Amanda M. Mowery, 29, of Newton, is charged with failure to stop within the assured clear distance after authorities were called to the 300 block of First Avenue East at 8:34 p.m. Saturday. Mark Ross slowed and stopped to turn and Mowery slowed but was unable to stop her vehicle, hitting the rear of Ross’ vehicle. Ross had approximately $100 in damage while Mowery had approximately $1,000. She was cited and released to appear.

• A nine-year-old juvenile is charged with second-degree criminal mischief and assault after authorities were called to Woodrow Wilson school at 10 a.m. Thursday. Officers were called about a student who had destroyed a room and was out of control. Officers saw the room which had holes in the walls and wiring exposed from the ceiling with the ceiling being smashed. The juvenile said he became upset while doing work and was not allowed to have the stress ball. Officers spoke with the principal to get total damages. On Jan. 30, officers were once again called to the school where a victim had been assaulted and another room destroyed. Officers saw more damage to the walls and ceiling and a computer that was not functioning. The victim alleged he had been bitten. The overall total of the damage was more than $2,000. He was cited and released to appear.

• Christopher B. Hasselbrink, 22, of Newton, is charged with simulated public intoxication after authorities were called to 821 S. 13th Ave. E. #5F at 10:58 p.m. Dec. 31. Officers were called on an argument and found Hasselbrink. He smelled strongly of alcohol and was having trouble keeping his balance and had very slurred speech. Officers gave him a ride to his residence but were later informed he had left the residence. He was found in the 800 block of East Fifth Street South. He was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Sarah E. Shannon, 33, of Newton, is charged with failure to maintain control after authorities were called to the 600 block of Iowa Speedway Drive at 12:13 a.m. Sunday. Eric Shatto was traveling northbound when Shannon, traveling southbound, began to lose control and the rear of Shannon’s vehicle crossed over the center and made contact with the front of Shatto’s vehicle. Shatto had approximately $3,500 in damage while Shannon’s had approximately $5,000. She was cited and released to appear.
