CMB girls halt losing skid, boys lose in final seconds

JEWELL — The Collins-Maxwell/Baxter girls’ basketball team hit 9-of-13 from 3-point range and a strong third quarter helped them end a seven-game losing streak.

Brianda Bane buried three treys and finished with 17 points and 14 rebounds, while Lexi Breon added 15 points, five assists and four rebounds as the Raiders downed host South Hamilton, 62-45.

Bridget Hurley also scored 15 points and grabbed five boards. Carter Larson corralled 12 boards, too. Both Breon and Hurley each connected on three triples.

CMB (3-15 overall, 3-12 in HOIAC) led 17-11 after one and used a 19-10 advantage in the third to pull away for good. The Raiders made 20-of-44 from the floor and 13-of-18 from the foul line.

South Hamilton dropped to 2-15 overall and 2-14 in conference play.

BOYS

South Hamilton 52, CMB 49

JEWELL – The CMB boys basketball team held a 49-46 lead with 4 seconds to go, but Marco Balderas went 6-of-6 from the line to complete South Hamilton’s rally in the final seconds.

CMB led 37-23 after three quarters, but the Hawks, who got 17 points and eight rebounds in the game from Andy Cook, outscored their visitors 29-12 in the final 8 minutes.

Balderas, a freshman, finished with nine points. He was fouled with 3.9 seconds to play and then CMB was called for a technical foul. Those four freebies put the Hawks (4-10 overall, 4-9 in HOIAC) ahead and Balderas was fouled on the ensuing inbounds pass and hit both free throws again.

Bryce Kemp led the Raiders with 19 points, seven rebounds and five assists, while Seth Balke had 11 points, six assists and six rebounds.

Brady Stover buried three 3-pointers and finished with 12 points. But only three other CMB players scored and none put in more than three points.

Patrick Girard collected four assists and five rebounds.

CMB (7-9, 5-7) led 13-10 after one and took a 22-16 lead into halftime.

The Raiders lost by three and went 6-of-14 from the foul line.

Both CMB squads will try for the season sweep against Colfax-Mingo on Tuesday. The doubleheader will tip off at 6 p.m. in Baxter.
