Hawk teams split SICL games

BELLE PLAINE — Lynnville-Sully’s boys made a bid to hand South Iowa Cedar League leader Belle Plaine its first loss of the season. The Hawks pushed the undefeated Plainsmen to the brink, but came up short, 63-59, Tuesday.

The Class 1A sixth-ranked Lynnville-Sully’s girls remained undefeated also. The Hawk girls dealt out a 52-31 setback to their hosts. Lynnville-Sully’s girls improved to 17-0 overall and 15-0 in SICL play.

In the boys’ contest, Belle Plaine (15-0, 14-0) were up by three points, 13-10, at the end of the first quarter against Lynnville-Sully (9-5, 8-5). The Plainsmen’s lead grew to 32-21 by halftime.

The Hawk boys held their own against the Plainsmen in the third quarter. Down 44-32 heading into the final eight minutes of play, the Hawks made the run, outscoring Belle Plaine, 27-19.

“I thought our guys show a lot of heart and toughness tonight,” said Nick Harthoorn, Lynnville-Sully boys’ head coach. “We weren’t able to pull out the victory, but we took some steps forward as a team. We have some areas to improve, but we did a lot of things well tonight.”

Tyler Van Zante drained six 3-pointers for his 18 points for the Hawks. Lynnville-Sully went 11-of-30 from 3-point range. Ben Trettin tallied 18 points plus dished out nine assists and made four steals for the Hawks.

Sage Ehresman had three 3-pointers for his nine points, grabbed seven rebounds and had six assists. Kyle Van Dyke scored 12 points and handled six rebounds. Jesse Van Wyk controlled six rebounds and score two points.

The Plainsmen shot 54 percent, 22-of-41, from the field and downed 16-of-24 free throw attempts. They got 24 points and 10 rebounds from Justin Jacobi and 17 points from Trey Squires.

Lynnville-Sully’s girls put Belle Plaine away with an 18-8 run in the fourth quarter. The Hawks led the entire game including a 25-15 halftime advantage. They were up 34-23 after three periods.

“We did a better job of moving the ball at the end of the third quarter and start of the fourth quarter, which led to some open looks that we were able to knock down,” said Jerry Hulsing, Lynnville-Sully girls’ head coach. “That sparked our defense and we were able to string together a couple of stops. I have to give the girls credit they found a way to get it done tonight.”

The Hawk girls shot the ball better than they have of late from the field. They were 22-of-51 for 43 percent. They only hit 5-of-9 free throw attempts in the game.

Brenna Lanser led the way for Lynnville-Sully with 20 points and nine rebounds. Madison Rasmusson scored 14 points, had three assists and three steals.

Marissa Vos had eight points and nine rebounds while Lysandra James had eight points, eight rebounds and three steals. Kasiah Ehresman scored two points.

Marisa Pope scored 17 points for Belle Plaine.

On Monday, Lynnville-Sully’s teams travel to Victor Friday to play HLV.
