John E. Nimmo

John E. Nimmo, son of Ray and Cleo (Messick) Nimmo, was born March 25, 1936, in Monroe, and died at Boone County Hospital Jan. 17, 2015 at the age of 78.

John graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1954. After graduating, he enlisted in the United State Army, serving in Germany and was honorably discharged in 1956.
Upon his return from the military, John enrolled at Iowa State University in Ames, and graduated with a BS in civil engineering in 1967. In 1964, John was united in marriage to Florence Irene White at the Newton Methodist Church in Newton. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with family and friends last February. Following graduation from Iowa State University, John was employed at the Department of Transportation in Ames. In 1999, after 42 years of service, he retired as a senior level director. John and Florence designed and built their home in rural Boone County in 1970, where they shared their home for the last 34 years, and in 1975, filled their home when they adopted their three children, Patrick, James and Joanna. John enjoyed fishing, piloting his airplane, gardening, drawing, tinkering in his workshop and spending time with his grandchildren.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Cleo; his brothers, Keith, Kenneth and Duane Nimmo; his son, James Nimmo; his brothers-in-law, Jim Marsh and Delbert Ohrt.

Survivors include his wife Florence Nimmo of Boone; daughter, Joanna (Mike) Sorber of Jefferson; son, Patrick (Sanna) Nimmo of Poughquag, N.Y.; granddaughters, Mallory Sorber and Mollie Sorber both of Jefferson; brothers, Joe (Judy) Nimmo of St. Charles, Ill., and Alan Nimmo of Newton; sister, Phyllis Marsh of Annapolis, Md.; sister-in-law Margaret Nimmo of Afton, Minn.; nieces; nephews; other relatives; and many friends.

A celebration of life service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21 at the First United Methodist Church in Boone. A graveside service will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21 at Newton Union Cemetery in Newton. Visitation with the family will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20 at Schroeder Funeral Home on the corner of Story and Fifth Street in Boone.
