GRIMES — Newton High’s Cardinal girls and boys dropped a Little Hawkeye Conference doubleheader Friday against host Dallas Center-Grimes.

The DCG Fillies overwhelmed the visiting Cardinal girls quickly, leading 16-2 by the end of the first quarter. Dallas Center-Grimes was up 43-9 at halftime on its way to a 63-22 victory.

“They took it to us in the first half and we didn’t respond to it at all,” said Brandon Sharpe, Newton girls’ head coach. “In the second half, we started to show glimpses of what Cardinal basketball is, but the hole was too big to dig out of.”

Newton’s girls finished the first semester at 1-6. They are 1-1 in LHC action while the Fillies go to 2-1 in conference play and 4-4 overall.

Michaela Jacobsen led the Cardinal girls with six points. Sydney Jenkins had five points and Taylor Moon scored four points.

The Fillies were paced by Allison O'Brien's 15 points and Jenna Borchers' 11 points. They had 10 players score points in the game.

Dallas Center-Grimes went inside steadily and its 6-foot-9-inch post player Austin Rix responded with 25 points in leading the Mustangs past the Cardinal boys 71-56. The Mustangs opened with a 20-11 first-quarter lead.

Newton found itself down by 12 points, 37-25, by halftime. The Cardinals weren’t able to crack through the 12-point barrier in the second half. It was still a 12-point game heading in the final period, but the Mustangs stretched their lead out.

Nick Easley fired in 12 points for the Cardinals. Connor Gholson and Tyler Wood each tossed in 11 points.

Along with Rix scoring in double figures, the Mustangs got 16 points from Trey Washington, 13 from Anthony Jacobsen and 12 from Doug Heritage.

The Cardinal boys turn around to play Des Moines Christian Saturday in a non-conference road game to finish up the first semester of play. Newton is 3-2 overall and 0-2 in LHC play.

No. 9 Lynnville-Sully girls 51, Sigourney girls 38

SULLY — Lynnville-Sully’s girls’ basketball head coach Jerry Hulsing called a timeout to convey a bit of advice to the Hawks with about six minutes remaining in Friday night’s home contest. Sigourney had just scored to pulled with one point, 34-33.

“I just told them we had to be more physical on the court. Sigourney was taking the ball away from us, beating us at our own game,” Hulsing said following a 51-38 win by the Hawks. “That was the answer we needed.”

The Class 1A ninth-ranked Hawks answered all right. They went on a 9-0 run to get separation from the visiting Savages. The run was fueled by more intense defensive play by Lynnville-Sully.

Sigourney scored the first basket of the game, but Lynnville-Sully never trailed again, leading 13-10 at the end of the first period. It was 24-17 at halftime.

Madison Rasmusson dropped in 13 points and Brenna Lanser added 11 for the Hawks. Lysandra James and Shelby Davis each scored nine points. James had eight rebounds.

Autumn Barthelman led Sigourney with 10 points and five steals. Jordan Carter had nine points and 11 rebounds.

Lynnville-Sully goes into Christmas break at 9-0 overall and 8-0 in South Iowa Cedar League play.

SULLY — Lynnville-Sully’s boys played hard, but execution was a bit off in Friday’s South Iowa Cedar League home contest with Sigourney.

“We just didn't execute as well as we needed to on both ends of the floor. You have to give Sigourney some credit. They shot the ball well tonight,” said Nick Harthoorn, Lynnville-Sully head coach.

The Savages used long-range shooting to push out to a 28-22 halftime lead in a closely contested first half. Sigourney netted five of its nine 3-pointers in the first half. Overall, the Savages shot 51 percent from the field as they defeated the Hawks 66-51.

Lynnville-Sully was within 11 points in the fourth quarter, then Sigourney stretched things out again.

Kyle Van Dyke had a double-double for Lynnville-Sully with 14 points and 16 rebounds. Jake Brand scored 12 points. The Hawks shot just 31 percent from the field.

The Savages were paced by Colton Powers and Jordan Albert with 15 points apiece. Matus Strevko scored 14 points. Blaine Getter finished with 12 points. Powers and Getter each had three 3-pointers.

Collins-Maxwell/Baxter boys 53, Colfax-Mingo boys 50

COLFAX — Collins-Maxwell/Baxter senior Joey Nissen continued his hot shooting Friday night.

For the fourth game in a row, Nissen scored in double-figures, this time putting in 20 points and draining five 3-pointers in the Raiders' 53-50 win over Colfax-Mingo.

CMB never trailed but had a difficult time putting away the Tigerhawks in winning its third straight game.

"Three in a row is good going into Christmas break," CMB coach Scott Brummel said. "I wish we would have finished a little better tonight. We got a 10-point lead and gave some of it back. We are getting some confidence though."

The Raiders led by four after one quarter and at halftime and led by as many as 14 in the second half, but Colfax-Mingo wouldn't go away quietly.

"In terms of effort, I couldn't be prouder of what the kids gave. They came out against a very good CMB team and gave tremendous effort," Colfax-Mingo coach John Borts said.

"We had all the looks that we wanted. We took good shots. And when we start knocking down those shots and do a better job at the free throw line, maybe we can get over the hump one of these nights and be on top on that scoreboard."

Colin Lourens finished with 12 points and 14 rebounds for the Tigerhawks, while Jacob Lietz had a team-high 13 points and Jared Myers finished with 12.

Nissen buried a free throw to put the Raiders up nine with 43 seconds to play, but the Tigerhawks (0-6, 0-6) closed the gap after a 3-pointer from Lietz and a pair of free throws from Jarod Nichols. Lietz made it a three-point difference with a lay-up at the buzzer.

Seth Balke also had 12 points for the Raiders, who are now 3-5 overall and 2-4 in Heart of Iowa Athletic Conference play.

Collins-Maxwell/Baxter girls 58, Colfax-Mingo girls 32

COLFAX — Four players scored in double-figures and the Raiders won their second straight.

Freshman Brianda Bane scored 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, senior Lexi Breon tallied 12 points and dished out eight assists and sophomore Mikayla Eslinger and junior Carter Larson went for 12 and 10 points, respectively, as CMB led by 10 after one and was never challenged after that.

CMB was without the services of its second leading scorer Bridget Hurley, who was gone for a family commitment. Hurley's teammates stepped up in her place though.

"Four players in double-figures is huge and that's what we need to strive for every night," CMB coach Jamie Zabel said. "People did step up in Bridget's place. Just because we are missing a starter doesn't mean we get to go out and not do what we need to do to win."

CMB (2-8, 2-5) held a 27-14 advantage at halftime and then outscored Colfax-Mingo 11-4 in the third. The two teams combined to score 34 points in the fourth, but the Raiders' lead was too big to overcome.

"Tonight, we did a great job of breaking the press. That didn't bother us," said Colfax-Mingo coach Michelle Grant. "We just turned the ball over running our offense. We just need to shoot the ball. We can't let an opportunity to shoot the ball go. I would rather them shoot the ball then turnover on any universe."

Sara Lahart had eight points in the loss for the Tigerhawks (0-8, 0-7), while McKeely Tjaden added seven and Ivy Moore contributed six.

Prairie City-Monroe girls 60, Saydel girls 43

MONROE — The Mustangs trailed by two points after one quarter but outscored Saydel 49-30 over the final three quarters in beating the Class 3A No. 13 Eagles with ease.

Rachel Freland finished with 18 points, five rebounds and four blocks and Rachel Gulling chipped in a season-high 14 in the victory. Courtney VanHouweling also added nine points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals as the Mustangs stayed unbeaten in Heart of Iowa Athletic Conference play.

PCM (7-2) is 7-0 in league play and leads Class 3A No. 7 Nevada by one game. Saydel dropped to 6-2 in conference play after Friday's loss.

The Mustangs' first game out of the holiday break is at home against Nevada on Jan. 6. First place in the HOIAC is on the line.

Prairie City-Monroe boys 54, Saydel boys 38

MONROE — Logan Gilman scored 22 points and Ricky Reeve added 14 as the Mustangs won their fourth straight game with ease.

PCM led 14-3 after one and 24-6 at the break. The Mustangs are now 5-2 overall and 5-1 in HOIAC play.

"It was a better first half than second half," PCM coach Fred Lorensen said. "We guard really well that first half. There was not much Saydel could do."

Tyler Townsend scored nine for the Mustangs, who host Knoxville Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

"We are getting better every night and are getting closer to where we want to be," Lorensen said. "We'll know more about where we are Saturday. Knoxville is a really good team. That will be a good test for us."
