Tigerhawks handle Lynnville-Sully on the mat

COLFAX — The Colfax-Mingo wrestling team got out to a quick lead against Lynnville-Sully and then wrapped up the dual win over the Hawks when senior Chris Warner recorded an upset over Shannon Dunsbergen at heavyweight.

Warner tossed Dunsbergen to the mat in the first period and his win by fall put the Tigerhawks in front 39-18 and the hosts went on to win 45-33 in the cafeteria at Colfax-Mingo High School.

Both Colfax-Mingo and Lynnville-Sully lost to third-ranked Southeast Warren earlier in the night.

“We wrestled them a week ago,” Colfax-Mingo coach Bryan Poulter said of the Warhawks. “We closed the gap a bit, but they had some guys out of the lineup. We had some kids that wrestled better tonight and used some moves that we haven’t seen yet. So that’s progression.”

The Tigerhawks led the Warhawks 18-6 and 24-12 but Southeast Warren claimed wins in seven straight weights to score the 51-24 victory. A 15-0 advantage for Lynnville-Sully went for naught against Southeast Warren in their dual as the Warhawks rallied with another big finish during a 36-24 win.

“It depends how you match up against certain teams, but we lost some matches we shouldn’t have lost tonight,” Lynnville-Sully coach Steve Northcutt said. “I thought a lot of our guys wrestled OK, but we got out-wrestled tonight, and there’s not much else to say.”

Richard Blom, Jac Fisher and Will Dunsbergen all went 2-0 for Colfax-Mingo. Blom recorded both of his wins by fall at 138, Dunsbergen got a pin and a major decision at 152 and Fisher was given two forfeits at 120.

Noah Zylstra, Sage Zylstra, Carson Dunsbergen and Cole Nickell all went 2-0 for the Hawks. Sage Zylstra had win by fall and a forfeit at 126, Carson Dunsbergen and Nickell each won a match by fall and another by decision at 132 and 113, respectively, and Noah Zylstra got a forfeit and a decision at 182.

In the head-to-head match between Colfax-Mingo and Lynnville-Sully, the Tigerhawks grabbed the advantage with four straight wins at 138, 145, 152 and 160.

After Carson Dunsbergen gave the Hawks a 6-0 lead with a pin, Blom pinned his opponent to tie it and then Colfax-Mingo went ahead 22-6 following pins by Colton Lourens and Cameron Warner and a major decision by Will Dunsbergen.

Jackson Hardin (pin) and Noah Zylstra (forfeit) narrowed the Hawks’ deficit with wins at 170 and 182, but Colfax-Mingo surged back ahead when Jake Dunsbergen and Jesse Hagerman both took forfeits at 195 and 220.

The clincher for the Tigerhawks came at heavyweight where Chris Warner was facing Shannon Dunsbergen, a district qualifier last year.

Warner got the upper hand on a tie up and then took Shannon Dunsbergen down hard to the mat and recorded the pin in 1 minute, 22 seconds.

“(Shannon Dunsbergen) is a very good wrestler. Chris did a nice job tossing him,” Poulter said. “That’s a tough way to live because you don’t always get it, but he got it and came out all right. That’s the kind of wrestler he is though. That’s what he does and what he knows.”

Josh Dunsbergen and Nickell gave the Hawks nine more points with a pin and forfeit win, respectively, but the two teams traded forfeits at the final two weights, which gave the win to the home team.

“Colfax-Mingo has a solid lineup. They don’t have any weak wrestlers and they came out and wrestled hard and they out-wrestled us tonight,” Northcutt said.

A win over their future conference foe meant a lot to the Tigerhawks, according to Poulter.

“They battled and got the team victory,” he said. “We haven’t had a lot of those and sometimes you have to learn how to get them.”

The Tigerhawks began the night with a dual against Southeast Warren, which came into the night with six ranked wrestlers.

Fisher put C-M on the board with a win by forfeit at 120 and then Adam Teed made it 12-0 with a pin at 126. Blom and Will Dunsbergen each recorded pins later in the match, but the Warhawks rallied for the 27-point victory.

Against Lynnville-Sully, Southeast Warren got down 15-0 but won seven of the final nine bouts to win by 12.

Both teams forfeited at 120 and 220.

Colfax-Mingo next wrestles Tuesday at home in a quadrangular against Moravia, West Central Valley and North Polk.

Lynnville-Sully hosts its dual tournament beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Colfax-Mingo also will be competing.
