Skiff honors dual recipients of DAISY nursing award

Skiff Medical Center nurses Veronica Mangrich and Sheenna Bachman were both recognized during the organization’s fourth 2014 DAISY award ceremony on Nov. 13.

In a first for the hospital, The DAISY Award For Extraordinary Nurses was presented to both of the nurses who were nominated for the quarter. Both nurses have received DAISY awards in the past.

Bachman was honored following a nomination by Patrick Cupples.

“Sheenna has been a blessing to have throughout my hospital stay the past two weekends,” he wrote. “She has taken time to make sure not only the doctor’s orders were followed but that my mental health stayed positive. When I got down a little, she would take the time to make sure I was OK.”

This full scope of care approach was also noted in Mangrich’s nomination, which was submitted by Christie Bouck.

“Veronica not only cared for me,” she wrote, “but a number of patients, giving us warm blankets frequently, making sure to ask if we needed a snack or something to drink. She was very caring and professional. She even would let you order your lunch if the expected time was later than planned. She took time to listen to you, talk to you and gave lots of encouragement throughout during the stay. Veronica is excellent with all the values of integrity, service, passion, advocacy, responsibility and kindness.”

“I’m honored and humbled by the thoughtfulness of others who take the time to make these awards happen,” Mangrich said. “This DAISY award is a tribute to the personalized care that Skiff embodies. It is a privilege to share this honor with such a caring nurse as Sheenna. She and I both are passionate about carrying out our Skiff values.”

“DAISY was created to say thank you to nurses like our own Veronica and Sheenna,” said Quality Management Specialist Phyllis McDonald, who helps coordinate the DAISY program at Skiff. “There are 1,700 facilities in all 50 states and 11 other countries committed to honoring nurses with the DAISY award. Veronica and Sheenna join more than 45,000 nurses to date who have been honored by the DAISY foundation for their excellence in nursing care of their patients. We are very delighted they are part of the Skiff team.”

The DAISY Award, presented in collaboration with The American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE), is part of the DAISY Foundation’s program to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day. The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation is based in Glen Ellen, Calif., and was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little-known but not uncommon auto-immune disease (DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System). The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.

Nomination forms are available throughout Skiff Medical Center. The nominations are reviewed and award winners are selected on a quarterly basis by the Nursing Coordinating Council, which consists of professional nursing representatives from all areas of the organization.
