Newton girls fall to Winterset

WINTERSET — Throw out the two middle quarters of Tuesday night’s road game at Winterset and Newton High’s girls have something to build on. Trailing by seven after the first quarter, the Cardinals couldn’t muster a rally.

Winterset held a 27-18 halftime lead. Newton was held to seven points in the third quarter as the Huskies fired in 17 points. The Cardinals could not recover falling 57-40.

“It was an ugly showing from us,” said Brandon Sharp, Newton head coach.

Newton shot 46 percent from the field, but only took 35 shots in the game. The Cardinals went 7-of-18 from the free-throw line.

The Cardinals are 0-4. They open Little Hawkeye Conference play at home Friday against Pella Christian.

Sydney Jenkins, who was 6-of-10 at the free-throw line, led the Cardinals Tuesday with 10 points and five steals. Macy Leonard added seven points. Michaela Jacobsen tossed in six points, grabbed seven of the team’s 39 rebounds and dished out three assists.

Ryanne Rausch scored five points while Alex Hutchinson and Ellie Horn each had four points. Scoring two points apiece were Courtney Jacobsen and Hannah Rhoads. Taylor Shipley pulled down five rebounds.
