Grinnell DAR

Chapter

The regular meeting of the Grinnell DAR Chapter was Nov. 8 at the Drake Library in Grinnell with 25 members present. Regent Macy and Chaplain Mary Rethmeier led the Opening Ritual. Vice Regent Melinda Hardin led in the Pledge of Allegiance and the American Creed.

The following reports were given: Darlene Leib, Registrar, reported we have 63 members; Jeanette Shannon gave information on ways to avoid falling; American History essays were collected and Barbara Hug gave an update on the Woman in American History recognition; Betty Carr reported that the Good Citizen Scholarship Applications have been sent to the schools, Jeanette Shannon reported on the chapter being accepted by the Department of Defense as a Commemorative Partner for the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War; Maretta Grattan reported she had received a thank you letter from the Veterans Affairs Voluntary Service Department in Tucson, Ariz. regarding the postage stamps we send to them that are used as a therapy vehicle in treating and rehabilitating injured, impaired, disabled, handicapped and wounded patients in the VA.

The chapter received thank you letters for donations of box tops and soup labels.

In honor of Veterans Day, four DAR members were recognized. Cheryl Cocking, WAVE, Radioman, 2nd Class, served 1943-1945. She attended boot camp at Hunter College in New York, attended radio school in Madison, WI and was stationed in New Orleans. She said she loved sending Morris Code and once in a while gets out her machine to practice. Kristin Macy served in the Army Reserves as a Field Medical Assistant from 1981-2003; Kathy Jones served in the U.S. Army as a Pharmacy Tech; Jenna Rea Rederus, the granddaughter of long-time former member Darlene Johnson, is on active duty in the U.S. Air Force.

The next meeting will be Dec. 13 at the Centre for Arts and Artists with Kathy Jones and Kris Macy as hostesses. A Hobo soup luncheon will be served.
