Cardinal JV ends season

BONDURANT — Falling behind 16-0 after three quarters, Newton High’s junior varsity Cardinals scored twice in the fourth period. Down 23-16 late in the game, they were driving for a possible tying score when Bondurant-Farrar’s BlueJays intercepted a pass to thwart the Cardinal comeback.

Newton’s junior varsity lost its final game of the season, 23-16, to Bondurant-Farrar Monday night. It ended with a 1-7 record.

“We really played a good game. Our offensive line had its best performance of the year along with good defensive stops really gave us the opportunity to win,” said Tom Weeks, NHS assistant coach.

The Cardinals halted the BlueJays’ opening drive when Jake Bennett intercepted a pass at the goal line and returned it 19 yards. Newton moved to the BlueJay 18-yard line where Josh Gulling’s 35-yard field goal attempt was ruled a miss.

Newton turned the ball over twice in its own territory giving Bondurant-Farrar short fields and the BlueJays took advantage. The Jays were up 13-0 at halftime. The Cardinals gave up a field goal in the third quarter.

The Cardinal offense got to work in the fourth quarter, scoring on a one-yard run by Justice Borger, who also ran in the two-point conversion.

Bondurant-Farrar answered on one offensive play — a 56-yard touchdown run. The Cardinals responded with a scoring drive capped by a 21-yard touchdown run by Bennett. Borger tacked on the two-point conversion with 5:20 left.

Newton’s defense held and the Cardinals got the ball back. They moved right down field with an opportunity to tie or win. But, an interception halted the drive.

Newton had a balance running attack with four different backs all rushing for at least 40 yards. Borger was the leading rusher with seven carries for 49 yards.
