Newton junior varsity has rough time

INDIANOLA — Newton High’s junior varsity volleyball team competed in a tournament at Indianola Saturday. The Cardinals came up empty in the win column in four matches.

Newton lost 21-4, 21-13 to Ankeny, 21-16, 21-17 to Norwalk, 21-12, 21-11 to Indianola and 21-6, 21-11 to West Des Moines Valley.

“We were faced with some tough competition. The girls struggled to put things together,” said Mallory Sturtz, NHS junior varisty coach. “Despite losing a few girls to the varsity as they also traveled to a tournament this past weekend, we knew what we had to do to be successful. It was just a matter of getting it done and we did not have it Saturday.”

Courtney Jacobsen had five kills and one block at the net for Newton and served three aces. Alyssa Bartels downed five kills and had one block. Adrienne Bergman had four kills and one ace serve. Lusy Lilenthal delivered six kills and two blocks while Jessie Smith had two kills and one block.

Elise Axtel came up with 12 digs. Carter Lee had three digs. Stephanie Hoboheinrich was credited with 10 set assists and had one service ace.
