Sioux City leaders to seek grant to update hotel

SIOUX CITY — City leaders plan to apply for a state grant to help modernize an aging downtown hotel owned by a Chicago bank after a recent foreclosure sale. Sioux City Economic Development Director Marty Dougherty said the city will seek an Iowa Reinvestment District grant of several million dollars. The program directs up to $100 million in state hotel and sales tax revenue to projects that substantially benefit communities.

The Sioux City Hotel & Conference Center sits next to the city-operated Sioux City Convention Center. City officials have said they need a top-flight hotel to land events at the convention center and that they’re looking for ways to help the hotel.

The 193-room hotel opened in 1974 as part of a downtown urban renewal project.
