GILBERT — Befitting a game between two ranked football team, a large crowd filled Gilbert Tiger Stadium Friday night to watch a back-and-forth contest between visiting Newton High’s Cardinals and Gilbert High’s Tigers.

The Cardinals went into the Class 3A District 6 game undefeated (4-0) and ranked No. 10. The Tigers were 3-1, losing a week ago to another ranked team in the same district — Ballard — and ranked No 9.

Gilbert had a better second half then Newton. Newton led 22-15 at halftime then the teams were deadlocked, 22-22 after three quarters. The Tigers claimed the lead for good, scoring two touchdowns in a span of six minutes to open the fourth quarter. The Tigers added two field goals late for the 42-29 margin to hand the Cardinals their first loss of the season.

Gilbert pushed out to a 36-22 lead at the 6:13 mark of the fourth quarter. Newton wasn’t going away. The kickoff plus a 15-yard penalty against the Tigers put the Cardinals at the Gilbert 48-yard line.

One play — a Tyler Wood to Nick Easley pass and catch — covered the 48 yards in 10 seconds. Easley kicked the extra point to make it 36-29. Newton had a chance to drive for a possible tying touchdown and two-point conversion when Wood stripped the ball away from the Tigers at the Newton 5-yard line.

Gilbert held on a fourth-and-inches at the Newton 15 and three plays later kicked a field goal. The Tigers held one more time and ended the game on another field goal by Jacob Huston.

The Tigers were led to victory on the running (15 carries for 52 yards) and passing (13-of-21-145 yards) of junior Cole Drzycimski at quarterback and the running of sophomore Cody Dvorak (23 carries for 149 yards).

Wood scored twice in the first half on runs of 44 yards and 14 yards. Wood finished with 140 yards rushing and went 7-of-17 for 119 yards passing.Tristan Peter’s five-yard touchdown run capped off the Cardinals’ opening drive of the game, putting Newton up 7-0.

“We have to get better. We didn’t execute very well tonight on either side of the football,” said Ed Ergenbright, Newton head coach. “We turned the ball over a couple times. We weren’t assignment sound on defense. We just have to get better.”

Patrick Murphy and Jordan Travis each recorded seven solo tackles and a quarterback sack for the Newton defense. J.T. Thongvanh and six solos and four assisted tackles and a quarterback sack.

Newton (4-1) travel to Ballard in district play next Friday.

The Hawks defeated Iowa Valley’s Tigers, 48-21. Lynnville-Sully improved to 1-4 overall and 1-2 in Class A District 7 action while Iowa Valley dropped to 2-3 and 1-2.
