MASON CITY — Newton High’s Cardinals combined for a 331 placing third in the eight-team Mason City Invitational Monday. The NHS golfers were behind Marshalltown, which shot 318, and Waterloo West in second place at 328.

“I was hoping to shoot 320 or better as I felt that would give us a chance to win,” said Pat Riley, NHS golf coach. “It wasn’t our best day and for whatever reason we never seem to shoot great up there.”

Sophomore Austin Reynolds carded a team-best 78 for the 18-hole event at Mason City Country Club. Reynolds finished third individually. Junior Derek Damman shot an 81 for sixth place.

Senior Devin Shores came in with an 85 and Peyton Thomas, a junior, carded an 87.

The Cardinals go to Fort Dodge on Sept. 2.

The NHS Cardinal Invitational is Sept. 4 at Westwood Golf Course. Tee time is noon.
