Newton seeks input on comprehensive plan

Two ‘community conversations’ scheduled

The city of Newton is closing in on its two year anniversary of its comprehensive plan and is planning two conversational meetings to discuss what has been accomplished and where it is going next.

The first meeting is planned for 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Krumm Center at Agnes Patterson Park and a second meeting is planned for noon Aug. 7 at Newton City Hall. The entire community is invited to learn of the progress and voice their opinions on the current path of the plan. Both meetings are intended to have similar content and offer an opportunity for citizen involvement.

“Newton’s Comprehensive Plan is designed to be the plan for the whole community of Newton, offering a clear check list of ‘things to do’ to make Newton a great place to call home,” said Erin Chambers, director of planning and zoning.

Some examples of projects that have been started are the rebranding of Newton and the implementation of the Get to Know Newton campaign, joining the Main Street Iowa program and the creation of a dilapidated buildings demolition program.

As part of the process, the city is to revisit the plan every two years to keep the information current and see if the current direction is still the most appropriate way to go.
