Newton Cardinal Football Camp is next week

The Newton Cardinal Football Camp is Monday through Friday at H.A. Lynn Stadium. The camp is for student-athletes attending grades 7th through 12th in the fall of 2014-15 school year.

NHS head football coach Ed Ergenbright and his staff provide the instruction at the camp. Former Newton players and collegiate athletes will be guest speakers at the camp.

There are two sessions each day. From 8 to 10:30 a.m. will be the seventh and eighth grade athletes working in camp at the stadium. High school athletes — grades 9th through 12th — will have the evening session, 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the stadium.

Players should arrive early, dressed and ready in the varsity locker room at the the stadium. Players are to wear shorts, T-shirt and football shoes for camp sessions.

Each player will get individual instruction on the basic skills and fundamentals of the game of football. Position instruction will include quarterbacks, receivers, running backs, offensive and defensive linemen, defensive backs, linebackers, snappers, punters and kickers.

“Just as important as the skill development is developing character in the student,” Ergenbright said. “We will work to help your athlete in his understanding of what trust, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship really mean.”

On Friday, the final day, there will be an athletic fitness test open to all camp participants. It begins at 9 a.m. Again, participants are to arrive early and dressed ready to begin the test.
