Recorder’s office warns of scam

The Jasper County Recorder’s Office is warning local residents to be cautious if they receive mail asking them for a copy of their deed and property assessment.

The office has received phone calls from concerned citizens about letters saying they there is “deed activity recorded in public record” and that the resident should obtain a “current property grant deed and assessment.”

The company, Record Transfer Service, is charging $83 for the service. The notice is designed to cause a homeowner to believe there has been a recently recorded document, which is not accurate, according to the recorder’s office.

A copy of a deed can be obtained for approximately $1 at the recorder’s office. For more information, call the office at (641) 792-5442.
