Grinnell Chapter DAR visit the Freedom Rock in Sully.

The Grinnell chapter of the Daughter’s of the American Revolution met July 12 at the home of Melinda Hardin in Sully. Regent Kris Macy and Vice Regent Melinda Hardin opened the meeting with the DAR ritual followed by devotions, the Pledge of Allegiance and the American Creed.

Reports were given as follows: President General’s message, Melinda Hardin; National Defense message, Nancy Bender; secretary’s minutes by Barbara Hug, treasurer’s report by Susan Wendel and registrar report by Darlene Leib.

The following committee reports were given: Flag by Jeanette Budding; American Indians by Myrna Rusk; Veterans by Linda Hatch. Four members volunteered to make lap quilts to send to veterans for Christmas.

Kathy Jones reported the topic for the American History Essay Contest for grades 5 through 8 is “A Child’s Journey through Ellis Island” and for grades 9-12 is “Joining Christopher Columbus on his Voyage to the New World.”

School supplies were collected to send to the DAR schools.

The program consisted of members telling the history of their Revolutionary War Patriot(s). The stories showed activity from providing supplies to the Continental Army and state militias to fighting in the many battles to actually signing the Declaration of Independence.

Next meeting will be held in Newton Sept. 13 at the Centre for Art and Artists with Barbara Jones serving as hostesses. Lynn Peterson is in charge of the program.
