Carroll I. Hammer

Carroll I. Hammer, 84, of Newton died on Tuesday, May 27, 2014, at Skiff Medical Center.

A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, June 2, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home. The family will greet friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 1, at the funeral home. Memorials in Carroll’s name may be left at the funeral home.

Carroll, the son of Vernon and Iola Irene (Hinshaw) Hammer, was born on Aug. 27, 1929, in Newton. He graduated from Newton High School and served his country in the U.S. Army from 1951-1953. While in the service he was united in marriage with Ruth Klootwyk on Aug. 10, 1952, in Newton. Carroll worked as a welder and machinist for Winpower and was co-owner of Metal Fab, a sheet metal company in Newton. He was a member of the VFW Post 1655 and the American Legion Post 111. Carroll enjoyed riding mules and making wine.

Those left to honor Carroll’s memory are his children, Denise Catlett of Newton, Lori (Dennis) Rainey of Newton, Kevin (Linda) Hammer of Des Moines and Becky McNeer of Des Moines; nine grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; his brother, Terry Hammer of Newton; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ruth in 2004; a granddaughter, Danielle; sister, Helen Etter; and brother, Dean Hammer.
