Cardinals tame Tigers

GRINNELL — Senior Amber Karsten took the pass from Ryanne Rausch in a scoreless game, and found the net for Newton’s Cardinals. It was the only goal of Tuesday’s Little Hawkeye Conference game between the Cardinals and host Grinnell Tigers.

“This was a big win for us,” said Newton head coach Cathy Reiter. “The girls did awesome tonight. They came out full of fire from the beginning and showed how much they wanted it.”

The Cardinals and Tigers played a scoreless first half. With 11 minutes remaining in the 80-minute game, Karsten scored to give the Cardinals the 1-0 win.

“Emily (Forsyth) had a huge game for us with five big saves and some huge saves off corner kicks,” Reiter said of the Cardinals’ senior goalkeeper. “Our defense from our midfielders and from our back line was really strong tonight. Michaela Jacobsen and Emily have been huge leaders for us all year back there with their communication and experience.”

Reiter said Karsten, Rausch and Anna Barr had a few breakaway chances for shots on goal during the game, but were denied by the Tiger defense. She said Newton’s offense and midfielders were able to expose Grinnell’s defense on through balls.

Newton, which is ranked No. 12 in Class 2A, improved to 8-1 overall and 2-1 in Little Hawkeye Conference play. The Cardinals continue play on the road Monday at Marshalltown.
