Newton-area homeschool students participate in annual Track & Field Day

A number of standout athletes in Jasper County are homeschool students. But not all of them participate in high school athletics. Friday, all of them had an opportunity to take part in a track and field day at B.C. Berg Middle School in Newton.

Nearly 100 homeschool children ranging in age from 2 to 17 took part in a number of running, jumping and throwing events, as well as obstacle course events.

The 5 years old and younger kids ran the 50-meter dash and participated in the softball toss, the long jump and the obstacle course. The ages 6-8 groups, divided between boys and girls, ran the 50- and 200-meter dashes, and participated in the shot put, the long jump and the obstacle course.

The ages 9-11 groups ran the 100- and 200-meter dashes, and took part in the shot put, the long jump and the obstacle course. The ages 12 and older groups ran the 100- and 400-meter dashes, threw the shot put, and took part in the long jump and the obstacle course.

The event was sponsored this year by Taco John’s, McDonald’s, Pizza Ranch and Culver’s.
