HUXLEY — Collins-Maxwell/Baxter’s Raider boys amassed 166 points on their way to winning Tuesday’s Ballard Classic Class B Division track meet championship. Madrid was a distant second with 139 points.
Jordan Coughenour, Bryce Kemp and Zach Samson were double individual gold medalists for the Raiders. Coughenour found the 400-meter distance to his liking, winning the 400-meter dash in 51.88 seconds and the 400-meter hurdles in 55.85 seconds.
Kemp sailed 19 feet, 11 1/2 inches into the jumping pit to claim the gold medal in the long jump. He won the 110-meter hurdles in 15.20 seconds. Kemp also took the silver medal in the 100-meter dash in 11.19 seconds, and ran fourth in the 200 meters in 23.20 seconds, just in front of Zach Huffaker in 23.92 seconds.
Samson set a meet record in winning the shot put with a throw of 58 feet, 1 inch. Teammate Patrick Girard was second in the event at 51’8”. Samson collected the gold in the discus with a toss of 139 feet with Clayton Weltha finishing fourth at 129’6.”
The Raiders’ 4x400-meter relay team won the gold in 3 minutes, 37.19 seconds. The shuttle hurdle relay team placed second in 1:02.67.
“It was a good meet for us. I thought our guys prepared well and, for the most part, competed hard. We had some excellent efforts and some that we would like to have over again,” said Raider head coach Neil Seales.
Mark Deutsch earned second place in both the 1,600-meter run, 4:55.97, and in the 3,200-meter run in 10:54.80. Colin Thomson was third in the 3,200 at 10:58.19 while Evan Bianci placed fifth in the 1,600 in 5:12.01.
Austin Moorman captured the silver medal in the 800-meter run in 2:11.77. Seth Balke finished sixth in 2:16.22. Joey Nissen ran fourth in the 110-meter hurdles in 16.12 seconds and Brady Stover took fifth in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:00.43.
Hunter Gunderson finished in a three-way tie for second in the high jump with Coughenour in sixth. Both Raider jumpers cleared 5’8”. Huffaker placed fourth in the long jump with a leap of 18’91/2”.
CMB’s 1,600-meter relay team was third in 3:55.75 while the 4x200-meter relay took fourth in 1:38.69. CMB’s 4x100-meter relay team and 4x800-meter relay team each ran sixth in 48.08 seconds and 8:52.04, respectively.
“All in all, it is part of the ‘growing’ effort in which we are in,” said Seales. “We are getting better as individually and as a team and that is the goal. It was a good night for our guys and we were certainly pleased with the team outcome.”
