PCM and Colfax-Mingo girls place in Montezuma’s Lewis L. Lundy Relays

MONTEZUMA — It was a tale of two schools Tuesday night at the Lewis L. Lundy Relays in Montezuma. The Prairie City-Monroe and Colfax-Mingo girls’ track teams competed in the meet, with the Mustangs taking second in the Class A division, scoring 147 team points.

Both teams had some players on the sidelines — with fatigue wearing on the Tigerhawks and injuries and illnesses “nagging” the Mustangs.

PCM head coach Bridget Martin said that several Mustang girls stepped up Tuesday.

“We had a few girls running in races they weren’t planning on running,” she said. “Those girls did a very nice job filling in, and we were very happy with our full team effort.”

PCM scored 40 points in filed events, giving the team a strong start to the meet.

The Mustangs took both first and second places in the long jump at Montezuma. Ashley Van Gorp placed first, with a leap of 15 feet 10 inches. Rachel Freland was in second in 15’ 4”.

Second place in the discus went to Mustang Abbi Gilson, with a throw of 115’ 10”. PCM also took third and fourth in the shot put, with Gilson and Grace Telfer throwing for 36’ and 34’ 3”, respectively.

Mustang Mackenzie Clarke won the 100-meter dash, crossing the line in 12.93 seconds, a personal record. PCM also took the 400-meter hurdles, with Jacyi Vos crossing the line in 1:09.44.

The Mustang girls also faired well in relay events at Tuesday’s meet. The 4x400-meter relay team of Rachel Stafford, Ashley Van Gorp, Vos and Lexi Kain took first in 4:18.24.  The Mustangs also took the top spot in the 400-meter shuttle hurdle relay. The team of Rachel Gulling, Gilson, Kayla Jennings and Vos finished in 1:12.05.

In the 800-meter sprint medley PCM’s Clarke, Emily Hugen, Van Gorp and Katie Vande Wall placed first in 2:01.04. The team of Clarke, Kain, Stafford and Vande Wall also topped the 1,600-meter distance medley, crossing the line in 4:35.09.

In the 4x100-meter relay, Gulling, Clarke, Hugen and Jennings took second in 54.34 seconds. The 4x200-meter relay team of Clarke, Hugen, Jennings and Tatum Schnug placed second in 1:56.75.

Van Gorp took third in the 400-meter dash in 1:03.80, and Stafford placed second in the 800-meter run, crossing the line in 2:30.91.

It was a tougher night the C-M girls, struggling to score team points in many events.

Tigerhawk Head Track Coach Zach Tomas acknowledged that Tuesday was not the C-M girls’ best meet, but said he was pleased to see strong performances from several underclassmen.

“As a whole, we just didn’t look as strong tonight,” he said. “I think the girls did well to compete even though they may not have met the marks they wanted. This seems to happen every season at this point, and is just part of the process.”

Tomas said he still expects his team to be positioned well going into the state-qualifying meet.

Eight Tigerhawks clocked a total of ten personal-best times Tuesday. Several C-M girls stayed competitive throughout the night’s events.

McKinzie Tjaden took second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.64 seconds. She also placed third in the 100-meter dash in 13:43 seconds. Tigerhawk Dakota Hostetter earned two second place spots. The first came in the 400-meter dash with 63.33 seconds, and the second in the 1500-meter run with a time of 5:23.20.

Rylee Thompson took third in the long jump with a leap of 14’ 6”. In the 3,000-meter run Kennedi Hostetter finished sixth in 13:26.22.  The 4x800-meter relay of Iva Moore, Bailey Pease, Taylor Shepley and Cassie Craig placed fifth in 11:48.99.

In the shuttle hurdle, Dakota Brodka, Reagan Nichol, Tessa De Kock and Anna Blom took sixth in 1:29.72. The distance medley team of Erin Earles, Chelsey Lourens, Pease and Moore finished fourth in 5:05.58. In the 4x2oo-meter relay, Nichol, Sara Lahart, Amy Russell and Eva Donnermayer placed sixth in 2:07.47.
