High school math department takes first

On Wednesday, April 16, 16 students traveled to the Little Hawkeye Math Competition at Central College.

“It was a great time, and Newton came away with several awards,” Newton Senior High School math teacher Allison McNichols said.

Joe Malsom received the first-place award for freshmen, Colton Hansen received the third-place award for seniors, Evan Shimon received the second-place award for seniors, and the combined scores for all the seniors took first place.

Students who participated were seniors Derek Wrage, Colton Hansen, Amber Karsten and Evan Shimon; juniors Andrea VanWyk, Michaela Jacobsen, Christopher Thorpe and Jesse Cochran; sophomores Alyssa Bartels, Alexandra Hutchinson, Grace Coen and Grant Nook; and freshmen Emily Mehmen, Lienne Pak, Emily Miller and Joseph Malsom.
