PCM, CMB, PC girls win playoff games

Four area girls’ basketball teams opened the 2014 playoffs Saturday night and three won.

Prairie City-Monroe’s Mustangs pulled away from Adel-DeSoto-Minburn’s Tigers for a 64-47 win in Class 3A Region 8 play. In Class 2A Region 6 action, Collins-Maxwell/Baxter handled Ogden, 48-35, and Pella Christian ended Colfax-Mingo’s season with a 65-37 decision.

CMB plays West Marshall at State Center Tuesday and Pella Christian is at Van Meter in 2A play. Both games are at 7 p.m.

PCM’s win and Bondurant-Farrarr’s 84-48 victory over West Center Valley Saturday set up a rematch of last year’s first-round game. PCM, which lost to Bondurant-Farrar, 48-42 a year ago. PCM goes to Bondurant for a semifinal game at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

PCM 64, ADM 47

MONROE — The Mustangs used a 20-5 run to win in the opening round of 3A Region 8 play. PCM (15-7) held a 29-26 halftime lead but was ahead of ADM by just two, 44-42, after three quarters.

A big factor came at the free-throw line. PCM cashed in 20-of-32 free throws while ADM hit 10-of-21. Also the Mustangs netted eight 3-pointers on the night, while shoot 43 percent from the field overall.

Abbi Gilson was 8-of-13 at the line and hit two 3-pointers on her way to a game-high 20 points. Courtney Van Houweling had two threes in her 16 points. Hitting three treys was Rachel Freland, who finished with 15 points.

Freland swiped the basketball from the Tigers six times and Van Houweling had five steals. Van Houweling and Gilson each controlled six rebounds.

ADM got 15 points from Brianna Mueller and 10 points from Molly Jacobsen. The Tigers shot 35 percent, 17-of-49, from the field.

CMB 48, Ogden 35

BAXTER — Abbie Haupert dominated inside to lead CMB’s Raiders to the Class 2A Region 6 victory. The senior poured in 18 points, claimed 14 rebounds and made seven steals.

The Raiders (7-16) were in front but the Bulldogs hung on through halftime, trailing 30-19. The Raiders gave up just six points in the second half to win by 13.

While Haupert ruled inside, Bridget Hurley did the damage from outside, hitting four 3-pointers on her way to 15 points and she had six rebounds. Lexi Breon handed out nine assists while scoring four points.

Mikayla Eslinger pulled down 13 of the team’s 41 rebounds. The Raiders shot 40 percent, 19-of-47, from the field.

Liz Good scored 10 points for Ogden.

Pella Christian 65, Colfax-Mingo 37

PELLA — Pella Christian’s Lauren Jungling drained six 3-pointers to guide the Eagles over visiting Colfax-Mingo’s Tigerhawks Saturday. Jungling scored 20 points, made four steals and dished out four assists.

The Eagles (10-12) were up 12-4 after one quarter and held a 34-15 halftime score. Tigerhawks (1-21) kept battling to score 22 second-half points, but it wasn’t enough.

Hannah Beltman added 14 points for the Eagles, controlled eight rebounds, made three steals and blocked two shots. Marina Shannon swiped the ball from the Tigerhawks three times.

Colfax-Mingo’s Jena Teed netted two 3-pointers, finishing with 10 points. Also scoring 10 points was McKenzie Cogley.
