Four area wrestlers are state bound

Lynnville-Sully senior Caden Doll earned his third straight trip to the Iowa Class 1A state wrestling tournament. Doll came up short of repeating as the 160-pound district champion, but claimed second place and a trip to this weekend’s 2014 state tournament in Des Moines.

Lynnville-Sully, Collins-Maxwell/Baxter and Colfax-Mingo each are sending one wrestler to the Class 1A state tournament. All three teams competed in last Saturday’s Class 1A District 5 tournament at Pleasantville.

Junior Dawson Dahlke of CMB placed second in the 285-pound class. Colfax-Mingo senior Brett Stevens also took second in the 120-pound division.

Prairie City-Monroe’s Mustangs had six wrestlers competing in last Saturday’s Class 2A District 4 tournament at Fairfield. One survived to advance to the 2A state tournament

Junior Tristan Clark lost to top-ranked Shadow Leshen of Albia, 14-5, in the 126-pound championship match. Clark had defeated ninth-ranked Cody McNeil of Mediapolis, 5-1, in the semifinals. That gave Clark the advantage after losing in the championship bout, earning second place and his first trip to state.

All roads lead to Wells Fargo Arena for the 2014 Iowa high school state wrestling tournaments. Competition begins Thursday in Des Moines with the finals on Saturday.

Class 1A District 5

Doll won by a 15-0 technical fall over Blayde Baker of Wayne in the semifinals at 160. It was fourth-ranked Doll against fifth-ranked Tyler Foubert of Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont in the championship match. Foubert edged Doll 4-3. Doll earned second place by rule over Baker.

Doll is 42-2. He got to the quarterfinals of state a year ago before having to withdraw with an elbow injury.

Lynnville-Sully senior Meliek Meyer lost in the 145-pound semifinals, 7-6, to Lane Boender of Sigourney-Keota. Meyer won the third-place match on a technical fall, 17-2,  over Colfax-Mingo freshman Jaeden Sokoloski.

Unfortunately for Meyer, Boender lost the championship match, giving him second by rule. Meyer finished at 32-13 for his senior season. He was a two-time state qualifier for Lynnville-Sully.

Colfax-Mingo’s Stevens defeated Griffin McBride of Pleasantville, 6-3, in the semifinals but faced Jacob Krakow, who was ranked ninth, in the championship match. It was a rematch of the sectional title match a week ago. Krakow won that one, 8-0. At district, Krakow pinned Stevens in 1 minute, 10 seconds. Stevens took second by rule over McBride.

Dahlke pinned Luke Welch of Eddyville-Blakseburg-Fremont in 3:03 in their semifinal match. Dahlke was pinned by Bryce Brown of Sigourney-Keota in 1:14 in the 285-pound championship match. Dahlke won second by rule over Welch.
