Rockin’ Cardinal Red and Black

What a time to take pride in the Cardinal Red and Black.

Tonight, is Senior Night for the Newton basketball teams. Newton has called for a “pack with Red and Black” night. The Cardinal teams host Pella for the final Little Hawkeye Conference doubleheader of the season. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students.

Newton’s girls concluded their 2013-14 regular season against the team they’ll face in the opening round of the Class 4A substate. The Cardinals travel to Pella Wednesday.

The Cardinal boys wrap up the conference slate tonight, but have two non-conference games next week on the road. They go to Winterset Monday and Carlisle Thursday.

When the basketball games are done tonight, the school staff rearranges the NHS gym for Saturday’s Class 3A wrestling district tournament. The tournament action begins at noon Saturday.

A note about the Cardinal wrestlers — three are in the latest Class 3A rankings, which came out after I wrote the tournament preview. Senior Koby Hull climbed back into the 106-pound rankings at No. 8. Junior Dakota Dawson moved up one spot to ninth in the 138-pound division. Senior Ray Schroder earned his way back into the 105-pound rankings at No. 10.

Also Saturday, the Newton boys head into the state swim meet in Marshalltown. Four Cardinal swimmers qualified in seven events — 200-yard medley relay, 400-yard freestyle relay, 200-yard individual medley, 100-yard butterfly, 100-yard breaststroke and 50-yard freestyle.

Newton’s bowling teams are at the Little Hawkeye Conference meet Saturday in Pella. The Cardinals host a 2014 Class 1A Regional Bowling Tournament Tuesday at Cardinal Lanes. Bowling begins at 11 a.m.

So, you see, it’s time to rock the Cardinal Red and Black.
