Five area wrestlers earn sectional titles

Iowa Class 1A and Class 2A wrestlers opened postseason action Saturday in sectional tournaments. The top two finishers in each weight division advance to this Saturday’s district tournaments with state tournament berths on the line.

Reaching championship matches in sectional and district tournaments does not mean both those wrestlers qualify. Winning a sectional championship does advance wrestlers, but the losing wrestler is faced with a “true second” place match.

Five area wrestlers claimed sectional championships in Class 1A and Class 2A competition. Prairie City-Monroe’s Mustangs were at Albia in Class 2A action while Colfax-Mingo, Collins-Maxwell/Baxter and Lynnville-Sully were in the Class 1A sectional host by B-G-M in Brooklyn.

PCM senior Brandon Charls and freshman Xavier Miller were Class 2A Sectional 14 champions at 220 pounds and 113 pounds. Four other Mustangs finished second to move on — Chace Palm at 106, Tristan Clark at 126, Ron Marshall at 170 and Lucas Rains at 182.

Miller, Charls, Palm, Clark, Marshall and Rains wrestle at the Class 2A district tournament this Saturday at Fairfield.

In Class 1A Sectional 3, Lynnville-Sully seniors Meliek Meyer and Cade Doll pinned down championships at 145 pounds and 160 pounds, respectively. Cole Nickell at 113 pounds and Shannon Dunsbergen at 285 finished as runner-ups to qualify for the district tournament.

CMB’s Dawson Dahlke, a junior, was the 285-pound champion. Colfax-Mingo has two wrestlers — Brett Stevens at 120 and Jaeden Sokoloski at 145 — qualifying for district tournament action as second-place finishers.

The Lynnville-Sully, CMB and Colfax-Mingo wrestlers compete at the Class 1A district tournament this Saturday at Pleasantville.

A wrestler losing a championship match has to earn second-place with a win in another match.

If the third-place match winner hasn’t wrestled the loser of the championship match, those wrestlers meet in a second-place wrestle-back match, determining a true second. If the two wrestlers have met, second goes to the loser of the championship match.

PCM had six wrestlers in Class 2A sectional finals, winning two of those matches. In Class 1A, seven area wrestlers reached championship matches, winning three. Area wrestlers qualified because of the true-second rule while eight lost by rule.

Miller of PCM pinned Tyeson Van Wyngarden of Knoxville in 40 seconds to claim his 113-pound Class 2A sectional championship. Miller goes into the 2A district at 31-4.

Charls earned his 220-pound 2A sectional title with a 10-8 decision over Brock Caviness of Knoxville. Charls is 22-15.

Palm was pinned b y Kyle Sinnott of Albia in the 106-pound title match. Palm (11-19) won by rule over Kyle Dooley of Chariton in the wrestle-back match since he had pinned Dooley in 17 seconds in the semifinals.
