Mustangs power past Cardinals

Decked Cards

GRIMES — A three-game winning run came to an abrupt halt for Newton’s Cardinals Thursday night. Dallas Center-Grimes’ Mustangs overpowered the Cardinals, 80-38, in Little Hawkeye Conference action.

In a game rescheduled from Tuesday, the Cardinals were as cold as the weather outside. The Mustangs rolled to a 13-2 lead and never looked back.

Dallas Center-Grimes, ranked fourth in Class 3A, went inside to 6-8 junior post player Austin Rix. Newton had no answer for Rix, who finished with 23 points.

The Cardinals were held to a season-low 38 points. They trailed the Mustangs 26-7 after one quarter and it was 41-21 at halftime. Dallas Center-Grimes extended its lead to 64-27 at the end of three quarters.

Newton did not have a player score in double figures. Junior guard Tyler Wood led the Cardinals with nine points while senior guard Chandler Sturtz had eight points. Freshman Connor Gholson came off the NHS bench to toss in seven points.

Blake Borchers netted four of the Mustangs’ eight 3-pointers on the night. Borchers scored 14 points. Travis Ondler, who had two threes, added 10 points.

The Cardinals have to put this one behind them quick. They go from one conference leader to another. Tonight, Newton hosts Grinnell, which is 9-1 in LHC play.
