KNOXVILLE — Newton’s junior varsity and freshman boys came away with victories on the road Thursday night.
The Cardinal junior varsity netted a 41-28 win over host Knoxville to improve to 6-7 on the season. Newton ended the first half on a 21-3 run to take control for good.
“The junior varsity played its best basketball of the year Thursday in beating a taller Knoxville team,” said NHS assistant coach Tom Weeks. “We out-rebounded the Panthers and played a good, crisp offensive game from start to finish.”
Drew Stout had a game-high 18 points for Newton. Stout and Jwan Roush each grabbed five rebounds.
Newton’s freshmen led from start to finish in a 62-52 win over Knoxville. They sealed the win with a 21-point fourth quarter. The NHS freshman team is 8-5.
Trey Vanderlaan lived up to his first name, hitting five 3-pointers on his way to a game-high 24 points for the Cardinals. Morgan Maher knocked down three treys and finished with 21 points.
