NORWALK — Newton’s Cardinals started out strong in their next-to-last dual meet of the regular season Tuesday. They won the first three matches against host Norwalk.

Unfortunately, the Cardinals only won two more of the 11 matches on the mat. The Warriors defeated the Cardinals, 46-25, in Little Hawkeye Conference.

Koby Hull won the 106-pound match when Norwalk’s Dylan Lane had to default because of an injury at the 2:28 mark. Hunter Versteegh pinned Norwalk’s Tyler Hirl in 2 minutes, 55 seconds to take the 113-pound match.

Cole Peters racked up a major decision, 9-1, over Chase Fouts of Norwalk at 120. The Warriors climbed back in the dual with three straight wins. Newton was up 16-15 when Dakota Dawson edged Ryley Smith, 3-2, for the 145-pound match win for the Cardinals.

Norwalk would win six out of the final seven matches. The Warriors won five in a row — three by pins, one by a major decision and one by decision.

Ray Schroder, who moved up a weight for Newton, pinned Ryan Kennedy in 1:45 at 220. Norwalk’s Trystan Minnis pinned Joey Wright in 2:37 for the 285-pound win to end the competition.

The Cardinals go to Dallas Center-Grimes for conference competition Thursday. Then they are back at Norwalk for the Little Hawkeye Conference tournament.
