ALLEMAN — Newton’s junior varsity wrestlers had a very good day on the mats at last Saturday’s North Polk JV Invitational tournament. Eight of the 16 Cardinals wrestling in the tournament won bracket championships.

It was a good way to go into the holiday break for the wrestlers.

In a 106-pound bracket, freshman Jonathon Lawton claimed a championship. Freshman Logan Zibert and junior Jac Fisher each won a bracket title at 120 pounds. Peyton Patterson, a freshman, was a bracket winner at 152 pounds and sophomore Duncan Lee took a title at 170.

Junior Cole Doerring earned a bracket championship at 182 pounds. Sophomore Jordan Henning was a champion at 195 and freshman Caden Manning was a bracket winner at 220.

Others wrestling for Newton at the tournament were senior Earl Kimmel, sophomores Harley Walker, Trevor Miller and Jacob Smith, and freshmen Aren Sorenson, Reed Shepard, Lucas Montgomery and Caleb Kite.
