NHS freshmen boys sweep; JV splits weekend games

MARSHALLTOWN — Newton’s junior varsity fell at Marshalltown on Saturday, 51-44. The Cards’ JV team fell victim to some cold shooting against the Bobcats, going 30 percent from the field and 14 percent from 3-point range.

Newton trailed 48-23 with five minutes remaining, when the shots began to fall. The Cards closed the gap to five with 30 seconds left.

Connor Gholson scored 14 points for the Cards. Devin Shores led in rebounds and steals.

Newton’s freshmen came from behind against the Bobcats. After trailing by as many as 10, the Cardinal frosh team won, 55-46.

Trey Vanderlaan led the team with 20 points, followed by Josh Ventling’s 16.

Both teams enter the break at 4-2.

ON FRIDAY NIGHT, Newton's JV closed out Knoxville for a 62-56 victory. Newton held a 32-15 lead at halftime and took a 53-34 lead into the fourth quarter. Knoxville's ability to pressure the ball got them close, but the Cards sunk free throws at the end to eek out a victory.

All 10 players who got into the game scored for the Cards, led by Shores with 14. Zakk Weatherly led the team with six rebounds.

The Cardinals shot 45 percent from the field and hit three of their six attempts from the 3-point line. Knoxville shot 40 percent.

The freshmen Cardinals got a 52-47 victory over their Panther counterparts. Ventling scored 17 points to lead the team. Morgan Maher was not far behind, scoring 15.
