Lynnville-Sully teams dominate North Mahaska

NEW SHARON — Lynnville-Sully’s boys and girls overpowered host North Mahaska’s basketball teams Friday night.

The Hawk boys scored more points in the first quarter than the Warhawks had as a team. Using a 23-point opening period, the Hawks rolled to a 55-22 win.

Lynnville-Sully’s boys (5-2) held North Mahaska (3-3) to a frigid 17 percent, 8-of-47, from the field. No Warhawk scored in double digits.

“The guys came out and played real sharp in the first quarter. We played solid defense tonight without fouling,” L-S boys’ head coach Nick Harthoorn said. “Offensively, we took care of the ball and got everyone involved. It was nice game to end on before Christmas break.”

T.J. Cunningham led the Hawks with 14 points, six rebounds and three steals. Ben Trettin added 10 points. Kyle VanDyke collected 13 rebounds.

The Hawks were 21-of-54 from the field for 39 percent. They dropped in 8-of-17 free throws.

Lynnville-Sully’s girls, fourth-ranked in Class 1A, never were in danger against the Warhawks. The Hawk girls improved to 8-1 with a 54-32 victory. They led 27-13 at halftime.

“The girls played pretty well tonight on defense not letting North Mahaska get into any offensive rhythm,” said Jerry Hulsing, Hawk girls’ head coach. “We did a good job starting the third quarter with our full-court pressure causing some turnovers leading to easy points. Plus, in the second half we had better execution on offense. This was a good game going into break on a high note.”

Lysandra James recorded a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds for Lynnville-Sully. James also had five steals. Cassie Cullen chipped in with 12 points. Jade VanRees handed out three assists.

The Hawk girls shot 41.5 percent, 22-of-53, from the field and were 7-of-9 from the free-throw line. They had an 38-18 rebounding edge over the Warhawk girls.

North Mahaska was led by Julia Groenenboom with 16 points.

In the girls’ junior varsity game, Lynnville-Sully won 41-7. The Hawk girls’ junior varsity is  7-0. Brenna Lanser and Cheyenne Nikkel each scored 10 points. Marissa Vos controlled seven rebounds and made three steals.

“This was a solid win against our rivals from North Mahaska,” said Jeff Corbett, L-S girls’ assistant coach. “Our man-to-man defense continues to improve, and we only allowed the WarHawks one shot at the basket with excellent rebounding. Most impressive was our zone offense, where we continually where able to make the extra pass to get quality shots.”
