CEDAR RAPIDS (AP) — The city of Cedar Rapids says its water division will pay the state more than $8,400 to compensate for a fish kill in the state’s only urban trout stream.
Cedar Rapids Utilities Director Steve Hershner says the city is implementing procedures designed to limit future problems from water main breaks in the McLeod Run area.
Fish were killed when two water mains broke, letting too much chlorine into the stream.
The city’s water division also will contribute $1,500 to the Linn County Conservation Board to support a supplemental environmental project.
McLeod Run is a wooded stream fed from natural springs. The stream is restocked periodically by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
