DES MOINES — Five area high school football players received state postseason honors last week when the Iowa Newspaper Association announced its 2013 All-State Football selections. The INA all-state, all-class football teams were released last Tuesday.
Collins-Maxwell/Baxter’s 6-5, 205-pound junior Bryce Kemp was named to the INA Class 2A second-team on the offensive side as a tight end/wide receiver. Fellow Raider Patrick Girard, a 6-4, 295-pound junior, was named the 2A third-team as an offensive lineman.
Kemp was CMB’s second-leading recevier with 28 catches for 604 yards. His 11 touchdown receptions were fourth-best in Class 2A.
Lynnville-Sully’s seniors Bailee Samson, T.J. Cunningham and Caden Doll earned Class A honors from the INA.
Samson led Class A with 11 quarterback sacks and was fourth with 18 tackles for loss. The 5-10, 165-pound Samson earned second-team Class A honors as a defensive lineman. Samson also tied for the Class A lead in fumble recoveries with six. He had 35 solo tackles and 24 assisted tackles.
Cunningham, 5-11 and 180 pounds, was named to the Class A second team as a defensive back. Cunningham led the Hawks with three interceptions. He made 33 solo tackles and 17 assisted tackles, plus recovered one fumble.
Doll was Lynnville-Sully’s leading tackler for the 6-5 season. He recorded 60 solo stops and 47 assisted tackles. He had one solo quarterback sack. The 5-10, 170-pound Doll received Class A third-team honors as a linebacker.
The Des Moines Register named its 2013 all-state, all-class football teams on Nov. 23.
Collins-Maxwell/Baxter’s Zach Samson received Class 2A All-State honors on the Register’s first-team defensive unit as a lineman. Samson, who is 6-1 and 210 pounds, had 29 tackles for the Raiders this fall. He made two quarterback sacks and three tackles for losses. Samson recovered two fumbles.
Also, CMB’s Girard was named to the Class 2A second-team offense as a lineman.
Prairie City-Monroe’s senior defensive back Zach Uhlenhopp received 2A second-team defensive honors. Uhlenhopp tied for the 2A lead in interceptions with seven. He had 20 tackles this season.
