Harris nominated for KCCI Athlete of the Week

NEWTON — Newton junior Deonne Harris, who led the Cardinals in rushing this fall, has been selected as three athletes nominated for KCCI Student Athlete of the Week. The Des Moines television station (Channel 8) honors area athletes of the week.

Harris was nominated and he is one of three athletes that viewers can vote on. Andy Garman, KCCI’s sports director, will announce the nominees this Friday (Nov. 22) during the sports segment of KCCI’s 10 p.m. news. The public has until the end of the day the following Wednesday (Nov. 27) to vote for one of the three athletes.

Harris, 6-4 and 180 pounds, rushed for 603 yards on 78 carries, plus had 13 catches for 192 yards this season for Newton. Harris was also a state qualifier in the 110-meter high hurdles last spring.

Harris enjoys sports, hanging with buddies and homework, according to the nomination information. He is the son of Cher Guinan and Charles Harris,
