Sunbonnet Quester

Sunbonnet Quester’s held its October meeting at the home of Bonnie Rasmussen.  President Linda Medlund conducted the business meeting. Ten members responded to the roll call topic “Your Church History.”  Special guests Larry Hurto and Fred Chabot gave a program called “Historical Downtown Newton Churches.”

Fred and Larry are members of the Newton Historical Preservation Commission, which has been researching downtown buildings.  They reviewed the church buildings of the First United Methodist, United Presbyterian, First Presbyterian, Salvation Army, St. Stephen’s Episcopal, First Lutheran, Congregational United Church of Christ and  First Christian Church Disciples.  Larry showed a slide presentation of the earliest churches of the various congregations. After the program the group had a better appreciation of the rich religious heritage bestowed by the towns early settlers.    The next meeting will be Nov. 14 at the home of Charlotte Townsend.
