Cardinal junior varsity, freshmen win home finales

NEWTON — Newton’s junior varsity volleyball team has had a tough 2013 season. It played its final home match of the season Tuesday. There’s no place like home.

The Cardinal junior varsity defeated Pella, 25-21, 14-25, 15-13 to conclude Little Hawkeye Conference action.

Newton’s freshmen rolled to their seventh Little Hawkeye Conference win — 25-16, 26-10 over Pella Tuesday. The Cardinal freshmen went undefeated in conference play.

For the junior varsity, senior Sydney Bergman had two kills. Alyssa Bartels put down four kills. Katylin Ahn served up two aces, downed seven kills, and made 12 digs. Allison Ergenbright had three kills.

Sydney Hemann put up 14 set assists, served two aces, and made six digs. Stephanie Hoesbelheinrich had two kills and six set assists. Maddy Berstler came up with 13 digs, and downed four kills. Fran Lucas had seven digs.

In the freshman match, Ryanne Rausch went 13-of-14 at the service line with five ace serves. Emma Meyer put down seven kills on a 10-of-11 night at the net. Morgan Allen was 7-of-7 serving with one ace, and went 8-of-10 on net attacks with four kills.

Courtney Jacobsen was 10-of-11 on net attacks and delivered four kills. Bailey Davis was 7-of-7 at the net with two kills. Taylor Shipley put up 15 set assists.

Newton’s junior varsity and freshmen finish up their seasons at Southeast Polk Thursday.
