Dubuque school locked down due to distraught man

DUBUQUE (AP) — A Dubuque high school was briefly locked down after police received a report of an armed man who was talking about hurting himself.

The Telegraph Herald newspaper reports a neighbor called police just after noon Wednesday about a man with a gun who was speaking of hurting himself.

Dubuque police Lt. Scott Baxter says officers notified Dubuque Senior High School, Washington Middle School and St. Anthony Elementary School about the situation.

The middle school and elementary school already had dismissed students, but students remained at the high school.

School district spokesman Mike Cyze says the high school was locked down until police resolved the situation.

Officers spoke to the man for about 45 minutes, and he then was taken to a local hospital.
