Hawks capture four-set SICL win at home

SULLY — Lynnville-Sully’s Hawks knew the weather outside was dreary — thunderstorm — so they gave their fans a reason to stay inside the LSHS gym longer Thursday night.

The Hawks engaged in a four-set match against the visiting Keota Eagles with a South Iowa Cedar League win on the line. The sets were not quick ones.

Lynnville-Sully won 25-23, 17-25, 25-22, 26-24. The victory evens up the Hawks’ league mark at 1-1. They lost at Iowa Valley on Tuesday, 25-9, 25-7, 25-19.

The Hawks pounded the volleyball at the net. Cassie Cullen racked up 20 kills, and Shelby Davis delivered 18 kills. Lysandra James added six kills, and Macy Lanser had five kills.

Jade Van Rees was busy setting the ball, ending up with 43 assists. Lyndsay Terpstra was 19-of-20 serving with one ace. Van Reese had two ace serves, while Cullen, Davis and Taylor Vander Leest each had one ace serve. Van Reese came up with 23 digs, followed by Davis with 21, Vander Leest with 16, Cullen with 15 and Terpstra with 13 digs.

Lynnville-Sully swept all the matches Thursday night. In junior varsity play, the Hawks won 25-14, 25-13 led by Kristen Van Der Wilt with four kills, tw aces serves and six digs. Haley Hood had five ace serves. The freshman-sophomore team won 21-15, 21-8 as Makenzy Rosendall went 12-of-13 at the service line with six aces. Olivia Ritter had four kills.

Against Iowa Valley, Davis had four kills and 20 digs, and Lanser had five kills and four digs. Van Rees put up 16 set assists. Cullen, Vander Leest, and James each had three kills. Terpstra came up with 12 digs.

“Iowa Valley was a balanced team and very strong on defense. We had some long volleys, where we played tough and dug things up, but in the end didn’t get the point,” James said. “To lose a match, you make more errors than the opponent, but I feel we dug the ball well, and made some very good plays against a very good team.”

The Hawk junior varsity lost 25-20, 25-22 to Iowa Valley. Brenna Lanser had eight kills, 13 digs, and two ace serves. Jelissa Rozendaal had four kills, nine set assists, and 10 digs. James said each of the Lynnville-Sully hitters averaged 15 hits each between the two sets, and they just need to work harder on getting the hits to go down.

The L-S freshman/sophomore team lost 21-16, 22-20. Ritter had four kills, and six digs. Rozendaal had five digs, and one kill. Ritter, Naomi Shinkle, Haley James and Rozendaal served well.
