Students participate in ‘Safety Town’

The Newton Police Department is holding a “Safety Town” event at Aurora Heights Park three days this week for elementary school aged children.

Monday was the kick-off, and the other scheduled sessions are for today and Wednesday. Thursday is the rain day.

Officers use Safety Town to teach kids about obeying traffic rules and to allow them practice using four-way stops, two-way stops, lighted stop signals and using crosswalks. Kindergarten students from Berg Elementary were the participants in Monday afternoon’s session.

NPD Lt. Wes Breckenridge said this is an annual event and students come from around the county to learn the merits of “Stop, Look and Listen” from the department.
