When Amy Kubik was younger, she was diagnosed with skin cancer.
Even years after being cancer free, Kubik is protective of her skin. While looking for alternatives to traditional tanning, Kubik discovered spray tanning. After some research, the fair-skinned former Knoxville teacher began using spray tans.
Now Kubik’s in-home spray tanning business uses an all-natural organic spray to give her customers a natural glow. Her house is equipped with a tent and a spray gun where people can enter and receive four different types of darkness.
“It’s pretty easy,” Kubik said. “It’s kind of like spray painting.”
Kubik said nothing in the solution she uses can harm people’s skin. In contrast to tanning beds, which use UV rays to make skin darker, Kubik’s spray tans are, in the long and short term, safer.
“It’s definitely safer than tanning beds, which is the main perk to it,” Kubik said.
Getting a tan from Kubik will not protect someone from UV rays, unlike a real tan. Kubik said she offers four different shades of tan, adjusted for the level of tan someone’s skin already has.
“You still have to use sunscreen if you go out in the sun or something like that,” she said. “It will not protect you from those rays.”
Kubik, who moved to Newton a little more than a year ago, said she isn’t aware of anyone else in Newton that offers spray tans.
Kubik’s tanning business, like any business, required some investment. In addition to the tent to prevent her from tanning her own house’s walls, she had to purchase the spray-gun and protective equipment that her customers can choose to wear. The nose plugs and masks are optional since the tanning solution is all natural.
“It shouldn’t be an issue to breathe in, but some people choose to so they don’t breathe the mist in,” Kubik said.
It costs $30 per tan, but if bought in a pack of five tans, the price per tan drops to $20 per tan. Kubik’s tan will last five to seven days.
“I think it’s so great because skin cancer is so widespread and we have teenage girls who are tanning already, and when they get older, it’s really going to affect them later on in life.” Kubik said. “It really affects your skin quality. So that’s why I’m so passionate about because you never know how it’s going to affect you in the long run.”
